Just because you’re moving slowly doesn’t mean you’re not at risk of an accident, and our team here at Buckeye Superstore wants to help make sure you’re safe, whether on the road or in the parking lot.
Technology is grand, except when it poses as a distraction for safe driving. Some news that may come as a surprise is that more than 500 people a year die in accidents in parking lots. More than 60,000 people are injured each year in a parking lot.
What’s worse is that insurance agencies suspect that the number may be higher because there are probably hundreds of incidents each year that go unreported.
With the advancement of technology over the last generation the National Safety Council did a survey that showed 66 percent of drivers in this country use their cell phones in a parking lot. And, more than 50 percent of drivers are programming a GPS system, texting, using social media, sending and receiving emails, and taking photos or watching videos.
Parking lot accidents can be prevented and Buckeye Superstore Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram FIAT is here to help with these prevention tips and reminders for parking lot safety.
Parking Lot Safety Tips
The National Safety Council advises drivers to stay in the proper lane and avoid crossing over parking lanes— no matter how tempting it might be— when driving through a lot. Drive slowly and use blinkers. It’s never safe to assume other drivers know what you are doing. And on that note, anticipate what other drivers may do, a form of defensive driving. Stop at stop signs. When backing out of a spot, look around for other vehicles, people walking by, handicapped pedestrians moving slowly, and look down for small children and infants in strollers. Avoid relying on the rearview mirror as it doesn’t show it all, and turn your body around to full check your surroundings.
After you park and get out of the car, take a walk around your car and make sure you’re not too close to the vehicle next to you and there isn’t something on the ground that can damage your car.
While cars these days— including many new and pre-owned cars for sale here at our dealership in Shelby— have parking assistance. But it’s always a good idea to also check yourself for any motorcycle or bicycles near your parking spot.
Lastly, look out for potholes and cracks in the road and watch out for poor lighting and puddles. Trips and people falling is not uncommon. And always lock the doors.
